dry, hot
sizzling, choking, killing
smokey, deadly, lively, slippery
refreshing, relying, cooling
cold, wet

Well in the page of the book, it introduces the character Calliope. It begins telling us that Calliope was born twice. First as a baby girl, and then second as a teenage boy. This in itself is rather queer and odd to me. This is the first time i’ve really heard or learned about the queer theory. To me, it seems that queer theory isn’t just someone who is sexually different, but someone who is just different in general. Calliope is definitely different. From it tells us on the first, Calliope is neither a male or female. Calliope has been one or the other at different times during Calliope’s life, and to many that would seem queer because its different. On the second page, it talks about the inbreading that has happened in Cal’s family. That also, is very queer to us because we are used to the norm of not inbreeding. So the life of Cal, as well as the lives of her family and ancestors are both queer to us.

Most movies that are made after books aren’t completely like them. The Color Purple is the same. The movie doesn’t go into great detail about Celie’s life like the book does. It leaves out little parts that aren’t extremely necessary to tell the story. And there are also a few parts rearranged in the movie compared to the book. There is also a lot more going on in the book compared to the movie.

There are many other movies that are different from their original book. Eragon, for instance, is one such movie. The journey of Eragon is told in great detail in the book. However, the movie isn’t quite as detailed. The journey as well, is somewhat different. They reach certain towns at a different time in the book compared to the movie. And different parts are rearranged in the movie to kind of condence it.

Another movie that is different from the its book, is Twilight. As in The Color Purple and Eragon, the details that aren’t crucial to telling the story are left out. However, there are parts that the public believe should’ve been in the movie, but they weren’t. The meadow scene, for instance, when Edward and Bella first kiss. This is one scene that does not happen in the movie, but most people believe it should’ve been. Also, the indepth stories of the lives of the rest of the Cullen family is left out as well. A part that you would think, would seem to have an impact on the movies to come. However, in leaving out these parts and certain details, the movies are shortened to an appropriate length.

Quiz #12

1. why did the producers change the ending of the book?
- I think the producers change the ending of the book in the movie because it would’ve made the movie too long. The movie is already long, so adding all the details about Albert and Celie’s relationship at the end and Shug’s life with Germaine and her children would make it too long. Although these parts are significant in the book, by not putting them into the movie there is little that is changed. The big part, is that Nettie returns, that is in the movie. However, Albert and Celie also become close companions in the end, which isn’t told in the movie. If it was it would’ve given us a less hatred feeling towards Albert. Also Shug’s life with Germaine and her children isn’t told in the movie. If it had been, I think we would’ve loved Shug a little less, since she kind of left Celie in the book.

2. Explain why Shug is differnet in the movie compared to the book.
- Shug is different in a few ways. First of all, her friendship with Celie doesn’t go as deep in the movie as it did in the book. It doesn’t take as much for them to become close friends than it did in the book. Also, we don’t really get Shug’s sexuality as much in the movie. In the book she is portrayed as being very sexual and showing that to Celie. She does show a little of that to Celie but not to the extent as in the book.

3. Compare Celie to any character we’ve looked at so far in this class.
-Celie is much like Cinderella. She is miss treated, also told what to do, left to do all the work, and doesn’t have the greatest life. But then Shug comes along, just like Prince Charming does for Cinderella, and Shug helps make Celie’s life better. In the end, Celie and Shug both end up happy and Celie now has a completely different life than she used and she is also now in control of it, as Cinderella ended up being.

4. Explain how you are like Celie.
-I guess I am like Celie because I am the older sister. I want nothing more than to protect my sisters, and would do anything for them. I want whats best for them, even if that means I have to take on the weight. But also, my younger sister is there to help me as well. She gives me courage, and talking to her brightens up any bad day. We tell each other everything and hate being seperated. Celie’s relationship with Nettie is very similar to my relationship with my sister Kate.

I am not entirely sure what I plan on doing for my final project. I have to possibly ideas that i’m thinking about right now. My first idea is writing a short book. In this book my character would go through the different stages of the monomyth. The character would also exhibit different archetypes throughout their journey. And through this short story, I would show everything I’ve learned throughout this semester.

My second possibility is designing a game. In this game I would incorporate the different stages of the monomyth as well as the different archetypes. Each player would have to go out on their own monomythic journey through the game in order to reach the end. It would incorporate everything I’ve learned about the monomyth and archetypes.

Victory
by Newmellinum Poet

The time has come for my voice to be heard though for years I have not
uttered a word I have fallen sometimes due to the wages of sin

I have been laughed at and ridiculed
because it is God whom i truly believe in though my faith sometimes faltered
but my belief has not been altered

so i trust in Him everyday
and know that He will guide my way for i am His child that He chastises as His
wisdom is no disguise

He helps me through life’s pitfalls those ups and downs so i am glad that He’s
around

For without Him
in my life you see i would not have no victory

Thank you Lord for guiding me for now i know
I’ll have
everlasting life with thee.
